A downloadable game for Windows

Abject Abyss is a first person horror adventure. Take the role of Ernest Sheffield, one of many staff employed by the enormous Luminary Corporation, just as everything is about to fall apart.

Journey through a collapsing facility, piecing together what went wrong and trying to avoid the horrors that lurk in the dark.

  • Hand crafted levels, with hidden secrets
  • Encounter a variety of twisted monsters as you progress
  • Simple inventory management. Collect items, but don’t worry about weight or limited space
  • A focus on building tension and atmosphere
  • Straightforward puzzles that don't require nonsense item combinations or insane logic

I'm trying to recapture some of the atmosphere and experiences that I enjoyed the most when I first started playing horror games.  At least as best as I can on my own.

The full release is still in development, but you can play through the first part of the game now, totally free!

This is by far the largest project I've ever tackled solo. It's been a huge undertaking and feedback from the demo will be extremely helpful going forward. So a big thank you to everyone for playing!

You can wishlist the full game on Steam to know exactly when it releases.

If you're feeling generous and want to support development, you can buy the demo's soundtrack for a couple of bucks on my Ko-Fi.  (Special thanks if you do, It really helps.)

The demo covers the opening sections of the game. Enough to give you a taste of what's in store, but the scariest bits are yet to come.

And yes, the demo will be coming to steam too, you guys just get it a little early!

Q: I found a bug!

A: There is an in-game button that will take you to a bug-report form you can fill out. That's the best way to let me know, I go through every one of those reports.

Q: How long until the full release?

A: It's very hard to estimate but I'm currently aiming for late 2025 or early 2026. This could change in either direction depending on how development goes.

Q: Will my saves carry over to the full game?

A: That's the plan. I can't give a full guarantee, but saves should work fine between any version of the game. That includes between Itch and Steam.

Q: Are there different monsters in the full game?

A: Yes. All enemies in the game are unique, so you'll encounter new threats as you progress into new areas. They tend to get more intense as you get further in.

Q: Will the demo levels be different in the full release?

A: The levels featured in the demo are fairly close to being final, but it's likely there will be some further changes as development continues. Whatever happens though, the demo version will be kept up to date with the full version at least until release.

Q: Will there be localization?

A: Not currently planned. For now, the game is English-only. There’s a small chance of additional language support post-release, but no guarantees. More likely for future projects.

Q: Where can I follow development?

A: I do development updates on steam, but I'll also post devlog stuff here on itch. I have a bluesky, and there's a mailing list if you're really keen.
